2013 Bollywood Movies

Let’s have a Bollywood flashback 2013 and find out which movies heavily influenced the Indian fashion circuit. Since Bollywood plays a huge role in defining the trends, I just could not overlook the movies released in 2013, which made a huge impact on your closets, urging all the fashionista out there to go for a wardrobe upgrade.

Of all the hundreds of movies released this year, I have rounded up top 6 movies, which were not only mega hits at the box office, with some breaking records of the former, but they have had a huge role in playing the fashion moguls – thanks to their costume designing team.

Do have a look at top fashionably inspired 2013 Bollywood movies!

Race 2 Fashion

When Race 2 was about to release, everybody had anticipated a paisa-wasool movie because of the expected mind joggling storyline, thrilling climax, hot babes and action-packed 2 hour drama. When producer hinted at promoting just three brands in the movie; Audi, Van Heusen and Tanishq, he surely had everyone’s adrenalin rush.

Abbas Mustan delivered what they had promised from Race 1 – smokingly hot cast, exotic locations, luxe sports cars, bone-chilling actions, lust, unpredictable climax and great music. And the duo actually gave us more than we had expected.

Apart from Deepika haute couture gowns and dresses, her Tanishq accessories became an instant hit from the movie. Tanishq’s IVA jewellery collection was designed suiting the half-sister, Alina’s character played by Deepika in the movie. “Modern, yet traditional and delicate”, Deepika was heard referring her accessories from the movie. The beautiful gemstone necklace and cuff worn by Deepika are still in demand even though Race 2 would have completely faded from people’s memories.

And not to mention Deepika’s bee-stung lips, chiseled cheekbones and cat eyeliner make-up which arguably became the hottest makeup trends of the year.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani Fashion

The fashionably correct Deepika gave us three different looks to adore in this movie. Undoubtedly this movie was a huge success breaking all previous records at the box office, until Chennai Express surpassed it followed by Krish 3. Let’s not get into the market stats of this movie, but focus on the fashion report card of Deepika in this movie.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani Fashion

The movie offers us three different looks of the leggy lash.

Preppy Nerd Look

Preppy nerd glasses, denim skirts, ballerina flats and adorable day floral dresses and not to mention the cute cardigans in pastel shades. If you could pull off the trendy pair of nerd glasses then you’ve got half of her look. Her first look stays clean without any heavy jewelries, makeup and statement accessories. If you fall for this look then do not forget to add the messenger bag to complete the look. Just cross it over your shoulders to look like a first bencher nerdy topper.

Adventurous Traveler Look

This second look of Deepika depicts an adventurous lady, who loves trekking and exploring wild. This is her carefree and bindaas look, where she actually comes out of her nerdy cocoon and shows off her free-spirited avatar to the audience. While neon was a rage in those days, her neon gloves just complemented the trend and not to mention her vibrant colored puffer jacket.

Even Kalki’s fur hooded jacket was cute and chic. So, if you’re planning to visit Manali or abroad this winter then you can surely take some cues from this second look. And yes, do not forget to pack your pair of distressed denims which go perfectly with those winter jackets and for accessories, beanies, neon gloves, checkered mufflers and blue reflective sunglasses with hiking boots and you’re all set for a fashionable trip!

Give extra attention to your blouse, as it is the one which is going to do the talking apart from the transparent pallu. If possible go for spaghetti straps with knots or sheer blouse, which is also quite in fashion. And do not forget to wear the red pouts with some bronzer on your cheeks and you’re all set to welcome the New Year in style.

Dhoom 3 Fashion

Bikes, 8-packs, badass thieves, cameo as side kicks and not to mention bikini bods! Yes, I am talking about Dhoom 3. Just like Fast & Furious, the Dhoom series has now earned a class in India. This time, the Dhoom team is back with loads of new flavors, with Katrina Kaif opposite the perfectionist Amir Khan in this thriller series.

Apart from all of its expected elements, this parts talks high on fashion as well. This action packed thriller series has now become a style hallmark, an inspiration for both men and women having a knack for fashion. While Dhoom gave Esha Deol an iconic song of her lifetime in a gold number, Aishwarya just added more glamor to its legacy in its sequel in tanned and sexy incarnation in mini skirts, Pepe Jeans and cat eye makeup. After cherishing her super sexy bronzed avatar, the audience was curious to see the ravishing Katrina in a never before seen avatar and the Yash Raj production didn’t disappoint us at all.

2013 Bollywood Films

Katrina Kaif rocks 5 gorgeous outfits in this movie. Anaita Shroff Adajania, who is the costume designer of this movie and also Vogue’s fashion director made sure to bring out the best in this Diva.

  1. A black S&M style dress paired with thigh high boots accentuated with red hot lips.
  2. A red and gold corset bodysuit
  3. A hot pink bikini top and matching outerwear
  4. A seemingly plain yellow dress paired with a shimmering old belt and amazing shoes
  5. An all-gold outfit

Anaita had this to say,

“For the first time we were given a lot of liberty with the clothes, but in the end, it really came down to how Katrina pulled off everything we put her in”.

Although I didn’t really like the last outfit carved out of complete gold elements, the rest 4 outfits were rocking numbers appropriate for the character played by Katrina in this movie.

While Katrina continues to impress us through her improved dancing skills, these outfits were just icing on the cake.

Chennai Express Fashion

Chennai Express, which was the highest grossing movie till Krish 3 broke its record is a complete entertainment package. When Rohit Shetty collaborated with SRK, we knew the twosome would just deliver a crazy movie full of fun and laughter.

Even though this movie doesn’t speak high on fashion notes, but it certainly has a significant contribution in reviving the traditional wears.

Since Deepika was playing the role of a village girl, Manish Malhotra, the costume designer of the movie had to style her outfits accordingly. Manish and his team took inspiration from the street fashion of Tamil Nadu to style this humble South Indian half sari. Except one or two scenes, Deepika is seen heavily donning this outfit in different beautiful shades. I especially liked her navy blue half sari with golden border and contrasting pink blouse.

Soon after this movie, other designers like Sabyasachi Mukherjee and JJ Valaya came up with some superb half sari collections at various fashion weeks and soon there was a huge demand for this revamped South Indian traditional women’s attire.

Ram Leela Fashion

Everything is outlandish when it’s a Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie. RamLeela is just another great treat from this ace director. Deepika undoubtedly looks drop dead gorgeous in this movie sporting a radically different look in a Gujarati village girl character. Anju Modi, who has styled her outfits was of all praises for the actress for pulling off her new avatar so effortlessly in this movie.

Ram Leela Fashion

Sanjay, who has always been known for his flamboyant style when picking costumes for his movies, Whether it’s Devdas, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam or Ramleela, Sanjay always makes sure his actresses look every bit of diva in his movies.

Initially, Sanjay Leela wanted to work with Sabyasachi Mukherjee, the designer who had already assisted him in his movies like Black and Gujzaarish, but finally the director settled with Anju Modi to style both Deepika and Priyanka Chopra, who has done an item number for the movie.

Just like Deepika, Priyanka Chopra also looks equally ravishing in an item number in this movie. PeeCee kept intact the Sanjay Leela essence in her looks, by pairing her sensual white choli and dhoti with ghungroo and mehndi. And the tattoo on her ribs which was the major highlight of her looks. With Navratri and Diwali doing round the corners, the movie’s fashion take hugely inspired the Indian market, as every other fashionista wanted to don a Deepika’s look alike lehenga for Garba and Diwali.

Lootera Fashion

Under direction of Vikramaditya Motwane, Lootera is a period based film set in 1950’s and partly inspired from the author O Henry’s book The Last Leaf. This movie offers you an understated fashion statement in a subtle manner, retaining the bygone 50’s elements.

India’s tradition is rich and centuries old. While Ritu Kumar is one of our ace revivalists, who is hugely credited for saving the dying Indian craftsmanship; in the same way  Lootera’s costume director Subarna Ray Chaudhuri can be hugely credited for keeping up the Indian essence through his creations, be it Lootera or 2005 film Parineeta.

I won’t tag Sonakshi’s costumes as these traditional ensembles are back with a bang in the international circuit as well outpouring elegance in true facets. Sonakhsi’s sarees and blouse designs became hugely popular after the movie’s release. Soon these items were seen at various online stores under the “Lootera fashion” category.

The movie tells us why, some day—in the continuing absence of costume history books–we will learn to rely on Bollywood’s period films for our references.

Hope you enjoyed this post!
