How To Get Rid Of Crepey Skin

How to get rid of crepey skin is what you’d be looking for after you face the problem. Natural Aging, drastic weight changes etc all lead to crepey skin. Here are some massages, treatments and masks for every part of your body that can fight crepey skin.

Have you recently been noticing crinkly lax skin on parts of your body? That ripple effect on your legs, abdomen, thighs and arms is what can be referred to as ‘crepey skin’. Are your feeling uncomfortable with this type of skin? It might be time to look for methods to tackle this problem.

This crinkly skin can project an older age. It not only kills your confidence but also your self-morale. So it is of utmost importance to kill this completely and the good news is that there are a number of remedies that have been known to work wonders for women with crepy skin.

What is Crepey Skin?

Crepey skin can be a woman’s worst nightmare! Wrinkly or crepey skin is that paper-thin skin that shows up on various parts of your body, starting from the neck to knees. What appears like just finer wrinkles are not just another sign of aging, but may affect us at any age, even as early as your 20s!

The difference between crepey skin and a wrinkle is that a wrinkle forms when there are repeat motions in one area, whereas crepey skin results from the thinning of layers of skin called the dermis (the second layer of skin) and epidermis (the top layer of skin). The crepe like creases actually appear due to loss of collagen.

Causes:

Crepey skin usually hits you with age, but for some women even age is not a factor. You might be eating right and even working out regularly and still it can pop up at any time and in any part of the body.

There might a number of reasons behind this.

Let’s throw light on some of those creepy Crepey skin causes:

1. The Natural Aging Process

The most common reason for crepy skin is the natural aging process, where the skin losses its firmness and becomes wrinkly and loose. While aging plays a primary role in the cause of crepey skin, it is definitely not the sole culprit.

2. Drastic Weight Fluctuations

Sudden fluctuations (increase or decrease) in weight increase the chances of developing crepey skin. When you’re young, your skin is elastic in nature and recoils easily because young skin naturally produces an abundance of collagen and elastin. But, with age, your skin’s elasticity may no longer be able to keep up with your diet and exercise habits. Unfortunately, since your skin can no longer bounce back to life, repeated stretching and constriction of your skin often results in thinning and loose skin formations.

3. Sun Exposure

Most people are aware of the damaging effects that come with over-exposure to the sun. However, lesser known facts include excessive exposure to UV (Ultraviolet) light causes a process called ‘cross-linking,’ which in turn makes collagen molecules stiff and inflexible. Thus, as a result of the damage done by ultraviolet rays to the collagen fibers in the dermis, youthful skin becomes more prone to turn into crepey skin.

On direct exposure to sun rays, the skin tissues tend to expand and later returns to normalcy. This lends for the fiber in skin to stretch again and again. Over a period of time this results in breakage of elastin, which eventually causes skin to lose its elasticity. Repetitive usage of tanning beds or excess weight loss also causes skin fibre to expand and lax eventually, resulting in crepey skin.

4. Gravity Effects

As if other reasons weren’t enough, even the gravity seems to be after our pretty skin. Gravity, though beneficial in hundreds of ways, is not our friend when we age. As per laws of physics, what goes up must come down, and our skin is no exception to this rule. Sadly enough, crepey skin is in affected with gravity, and does not really treat midlife skin as kindly as it does for a twenty-year-old.

5. Side-Sleeping

As per Melissa Piliang, M.D., who is a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic, when you sleep on your side or flat on your stomach, your face is stacked down against the pillow, which pushes your facial skin into creases and if you lay like that for 6 to 8 hours on a daily basis, these wrinkles become somewhat etched into your face permanently. Unfortunately, this applies to other areas of your skin as well beyond the face. So, it’s best that you practice sleeping on your back from today itself!

6. Cigarette Smoke

Smoking, besides having a hundred other negative effects on your body, it also acts as a catalyst to aging. The amount and duration of the period for which you smoke has a direct correlation with the onset of crepey and wrinkled skin and it does not end there, Crepey skin is not only found on the mouths of smokers, but on all parts of their bodies, including their inner arms, chest, and above the knees. The primary cause here is that there are tons of chemicals in tobacco smoke, many of which are known to damage collagen and elastin, which are the base facets of the skin’s strength and elasticity. Therefore, it is easy to see how smoking can contribute to premature aging, saggy and crepey skin.

7. A High Sugar Diet

When you have a diet that is high in sugar, a process called glycation occurs. Glycation is nothing but the bonding of a protein or lipid (fat) molecule with a sugar molecule. Advanced glycation end products, or AGEs, cause protein fibers to stiffen and form incorrectly. The proteins in the skin that are most affected by glycation are collagen and elastin and these proteins being critical to maintaining a youthful appearance, leave skin feeling Age-y and old.

When collagen and elastin combine with renegade sugars, they become weak, discolored, and less pliable. As a result, wrinkles, sagginess, and of course crepey skin ensue.

Where is Crepey Skin Common?

Well, the bad news is, Crepey skin is not bound to specific parts of the body. It can actually occur anywhere and at any time in your entire lifespan.

The areas most susceptible to crepey skin include a woman’s décolleté (a woman’s neck and shoulders), and her décolletage (neck, shoulders, back and chest). Crepey skin also is commonplace on the face and hands.

However, laser treatments, chemical peels, hydra facials are few treatments that can help tightening the existing collagen of the epidermal layer, thus smoothening out the creases.

Procedure:

Although the aforementioned results have been observed to show significant results, use ultrasound rays, heat and laser rays as a part of the treatment.

2. Cupping Massage

Cupping Massage for your face is a proven technique that helps deter degeneration of skin cells. The technique also helps in tightening of skin and removing blemishes! This is the best remedy for the crepey skin that often arrives with age.

Wondering how a simple massage could do so much? The intercellular toxic collected between skin cells gets disintegrated and is evaded by cellular enzymes. The byproduct of this disintegration, called lipofuscin however doesn’t get broken down by the body enzymes. This lipofuscin as a result accumulates in various organs and between skin cells causing skin to become crepey and crinkly.
