A breathtaking ensemble which is inspired by the mystic and beauty of the glorious yet serene Himalayan range – This is how Padma Shree Ritu Kumar brought style, grace and vintage charm to the ramp on the 4th day of the Lakme Fashion week – Winter Festive.
Aptly titled as “The Thunder Mountain and the Curling Vine”, her collection is a kaleidoscope of dazzling colors, vintage textiles and tasteful crafts. She has brought out the raw yet mesmerizing beauty of the Himalayan range in her collection through the use of hand-woven fabrics, cultural motifs and weaves. The melange of contemporary fashion with vintage textiles is a celebration of life in the tranquil regions surrounding the enigmatic Himalayan range.
The first half of the show was an ode to the immensely pure and raw beauty of the hilly regions by using hand-woven loomed fabrics, Bhutanese tangkhas, prayer flags, woven silks, Lycra jersey and Kashmiri Jamavar motifs.
Rich in color, concept and design, the fabrics were a composition of silk shawls, long-sleeved coat dresses, kurtas with a tinge of Himalayan flavor, stylish trousers, leggings, kira( Bhutanese wrap around skirt), dresses, kaftans, wrap jackets and capes.
Take a look at this model sporting this stylishly cut black dress which speaks volumes of the hilly regions with its long embroidered sleeves and a coat graced with a high-waist belt
The unconventional and bold aspects of the collection were the cigarette pants with a enhanced version of the biker jacket and an embroidered swing coat. She has managed to maintain a fine balance between the traditional Indian fabrics and colors and western cuts for the clothing collection.
The second half of the show was bestowed with grace and elegance with lovely, flowing kalidaar kurtas in hues of white, beige, mid-brown and khaki. The models looked slender and gorgeous with the kalidar kurtas paired with Reliance Jewels collection – rich chandelier earrings, pretty jhumkas and kaan phool.

The icing on the cake came in the form of Kashmiri beauty Nargis Fakhri who looked divine in a flowing, heavily embellished white kalidaar kurta matched with a beautiful dupatta.
Adorned with regal kundan jewelry comprised of diamond polki set, maang tikka and haath phool from the Reliance jewel collection, she looked pristine, angelic and complete in the contemporary Indian attire.
Nargis commented on the beautiful clothing collection by saying “The wedding collection pieces are absolutely stunning and very exotic. And I feel gorgeous in this ensemble.”
Adding a glamor quotient to the show was the team of “Grand Masti’ an upcoming adult comedy which features Ritesh Deshmukh, Aftab Shivadasani, Vivek Oberoi, Manjari Phadnis and Bruna Abdullah.
What made Ritu Kumar’s display of fashionable clothing at the show unique was the smooth transition of clothes changing from the bold black western cut dresses with traditional motifs to soft, feminine and long fairytale fabrics flowing gracefully in pristine white with lace, embellishments and a touch of gold.
The ambience was well-suited to the clothing collection in the form of an intricate floral backdrop and a circular ramp. The extravagant display of sparkling adornments and tasteful jewelry from Reliance Jewels in perfect harmony with the lovely kalidaar kurtas was a special visual treat. Her collection won the admiration of the guests, critics , models, film stars, corporate honchos and fellow colleagues at the fashion week.
With this, Ritu Kumar, has set a benchmark in the world of contemporary fashion and has stunned her admirers with her innovative ideas, fabulous collection of fabrics and glamorous designs.
