Let me just throw an oddball in your fashion court. In this edition, I am going to discuss about a promising fashion designer, Masaba Gupta, who is certainly power-packed in her own attributes.
We’ll surely gossip about her ongoing love affair with neon and even her hot tips on using neon, but before that a brief intro about her. Continue reading!
The reason why I stated oddball, it’s because this young talent is multifaceted and has a flair of knowledge in dancing and classical music to name a few. She is the talented daughter of cricketer Vivian Richards and Neena Gupta, who didn’t run after legacy rather to set her own benchmark in fashion.
This budding power house was schooled under Shamak Davar in dancing and had also flown to London to study classical music. She had then made up her mind to get enrolled into Anupam Kher’s school when destiny showed what was exactly in store for her. Finally, she joined SNDT and there was never looking back.
Under the label ‘Masaba’ she showcased her first collection ‘Kattran’ at Lakme Fashion Week Spring/Summer in 2010 under the Gen Next category for which she was awarded ‘Most promising Designer of the Year’ award.
Besides, she is also the youngest designer to showcase at WILLS LIFESTYLE INDIA FASHION WEEK 2010.
Her flagship store ‘Masaba’ currently retails from over 8 leading stores in India. Celebs like Sonam Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Parineeti Chopra and Mandira Bedi are among her esteemed clientele list.
Masaba’s collections have been inspiration to many, as she subtly blends seasonal elements with organic fibers. Her collections may be bold at times, but they never loose their aesthetic values.
Paint it neon like Masaba Gupta
Let’s talk about her open-ended love affair with neon.
It seems almost every fashion designer is betting on neon this year. This shade is in all places, adding a dash of brilliance even to the most muffled of hues. These days, neons have become far-reaching.
Let’s just find out why Masaba feels neons are hit
Masaba strongly feels that whenever a generation is challenged against fashion, it strikes back with a unique style.
Masaba had this to say,
“A lot of 80’s fashion sense has to do with the upheaval the generation faced. I suppose the same is happening now; all our thoughts and inhibitions are being expressed in these colors.” Her Fall collection, Old Street Neon Lights, can be the best example which defines the intricacies of a young woman’s fashion statement with unconventional designs with dash of neon accents, which define her attitude as a whole.
How to carry this shade with style
If someone is sporting neon for the first time, she should keep the look minimal and should never overdo it with lots of accessories.
Her style mantra –
Pair your regular jacket with a stylish neon brooch or a playful printed scarf. Even a shining statement neon necklace can be a great addition to your wardrobe. Be bold enough to experiment with contrast. For instance, you can pick a sheer neon shirt and pair it with white or Aztec prints with a tint of grey winter stripes.
As per Masaba, the neon coral is the most in trend, which is going to stay for a long time.
How to blend color-block with neon hues
She suggests, “Any impressing outfit needs to have balanced shades of color. For bringing together different layers of neon, one should have the knack in playing with their texture.”
You can pair classic woolens with denims, leather with sheer fabrics and shimmer with silk. And if you think this experiment is getting bit louder then you can tone it down by adding neutrals instead.
Can neon go with corporate fashion?
Ladies should use neon for corporate wear wisely. An all-purpose silk blouse can get a dramatic make-over with a touch of neon shade.
Girls can go for simple silhouettes, say a pencil skirt or A-line dress in the above mentioned shade. That being said, don’t confuse this shade with your accessories such as handbags especially for workplace.
You’ll only end-up with fashion fad, as it will take away your credibility at the job.
Tips on carrying neon for monsoon
Considering the prevailing season in India, she strongly recommends to highlight neon in your look; be it accessories, printed coordinates or just a pair of funky socks!
