Banglore based fashion designer, Sanchita Ajjampur, has been quite busy these days; juggling multiple assignments, shuttling between India and Paris.

Undoubtedly Sanchita is a great designer and has already taken the Indian fashion domain by storm when she debuted at Lakme Fashion Week. But this time she is news as she has collaborated with a leading French fashion house Yves Saint Laurent.

The designer was in Paris at the haute fashion house for her routine visits when she broke this news to the media. Now the ace designer is back to her city for a couple of days to prep for the upcoming Autumn Fashion Week, but will be flying back to Paris shortly for her new assignment.

About the designer

Sanchita Ajjampur was born in Mumbai but brought up in Europe. She was educated in Vienna and UK and she earned a degree in fashion at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture Parisienne. After that she earned her Master’s Degree in fashion and technology in Milan.

She did a workshop with Asha Sarabhai and Issey Miyake during her degree and this enabled her to visit Ahmedabad and Tokyo. This is how she entered into fashion world.

Her eponymous label, Sanchita was launched in 2005 and she opened her first flagship store at the Leela Galleria, Bangalore the same year.

Her Free Style

If you ever get a chance to visit her office in Bangalore, you would see one entire wall from floor to ceiling is covered with hundreds of book designs and are numerically cataloged.

“I love researching them, especially those on photography, architecture, knitting, art and jewellery. Books are precious but they are also meant to be shared, that’s why we have a cataloguing system,” she explains.

She believes her USP lies in her conceptual skill and her elaborate knowledge in European work ethos and techniques alike. She is one of the few Indian designers, who are keen on fusing fashion with art. She prefers to use 2 varied languages to conceive simple yet elegant items of understated luxury.

She focuses more on craftsmanship, as she strongly believes decoration is an integral part of fashion business.

Apart from doing fashion shows and running her own label, she is also an associate member of the FICCI.

This year, she had styled Frieda Pinto’s Cannes Red Carpet dresses. She said she took a “risk” with an “unconventional” ensemble – a “gild web gown” for the Slumdog Millionaire actress at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival. However, she is glad that the hard work paid off.

Sanchita had this to say,

“Something classic but with a twist. The concept was that of a gild web holding the entire dress together with embellished dragon flies trapped in it. Dragon-fly hair accessories finished the look creating a dramatic, surreal and fantasy-like appeal.”

Last year, when she presented her show at Lakme Fashion Week Winter, she impressed everyone with her collections. But wait this time there is a small twist. It’s not common that the guests give more attention to menswear than the womenswear offerings. But it happened with her show when she presented her men’s collection.

And now with such  a big contract in hand, she is certainly going to make her country proud, creating a formidable position for herself.
