Is It Really The Wrinkles That Make You Look Old?

How to reduce wrinkles

Face wrinkles

Ask anyone what it is that makes a person look old and you are bound to hear them say ‘’wrinkles’’. This is a popular misconception and we are all guilty in making out wrinkles to be the ultimate villain when it comes to retaining our youthful skin. While wrinkles do contribute to the overall aged look, a fairly recent study published in the Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology journal has turned up some surprising information. According to that study, there are so many other factors apart from wrinkles that lead to a more aged look. In fact the study claims that wrinkles are actually in the very bottom when it comes to what makes a person look old.

The Objective of the Study

The basic objective of the study was to gain a better understanding of what it is that makes someone look old. While a lot of signs such as wrinkles and age spots have traditionally been attributed to making one look old, there is no definitive proof that it is indeed these factors that give a person an aged look.

The Participants

The participants of the study were 120 women between 41 to 49 years of age. They were observed by a panel of six dermatologists, whose role was to determine the women’s age after observing their face.

The Surprising Results

The surprising results of the study concluded that despite popular belief, wrinkles were not to be blamed for making a person look old. The study concluded that the first major factor when it comes to making a person look old was the nasolabial folds – the curve or groove that extends from the edges of your nostrils to the corners of your mouth. These grooves were the primary cause of a more aged look. And this is where people who are a little on the plumper side can rejoice. According to dermatologists, people who are chubby will have less prominent nasolabial grooves when compared to people who are thin.

Apart from nasolabial grooves, other signs of aging that topped the list included sagging eyebrows, skin pigmentation and redness. Wrinkles came at the bottom of the list, which actually makes sense when you think about it. Wrinkles are not the most prominent indicators of age in first glance. Pigmentation spots and changes to the face shape are definitely more visible than some fine wrinkles.

The Conclusion

The study concluded that while wrinkles could even appear on people in their twenties, it is indicators such as nasolabial folds and skin pigmentation that were more prominent markers of age.
Anything that results in a change of the face shape, such as deep grooves or droopy eyebrows, contributed drastically to making one look old.

The Best Way to Keep Looking Youthful

The best way to look youthful is to replace the volume loss that might occur in the cheeks and cheekbones. This can be done by injecting fillers to plump up the area, thereby reducing the signs of aging.
