DIY Bikini – How To Make A Swimsuit:

There are several ways to make your own bikini from old t-shirts, vintage one-piece bathing suits, crochets, and others. Check out these awesome ideas to take your swimwear collection to a new level that too without burning a hole in your pocket.

Method 1: Turn Your Swimsuit Into A Halter Bikini Top

This DIY is a great idea to use an old full bikini suit including bottoms. Alternatively, you may also use bathing suits in a larger size.

What You Need:

  • Full bathing suit including a bottom with ties
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread

Steps You Need To Follow:

  1. The first step is to trim off the strings on the front part of the swimsuit.
  1. Next cut off the crotch part of the bathing suit directly into a half. Cut directly below the seam.
  1. Fold the cut part over and hem a straight line for a clean finish.
  1. Next use the strings that you cut off earlier and sew them over the top of your neckties.
  1. Sew the ties on securely using a needle and thread with the string facing vertical rather than horizontal.
  1. Repeat on the other side.
  1. Tie it around your neck and you’re good to go.

Method 2: Create A Scallop-edge Bikini

Making the scallop bikini suit is a little more complicated than creating a halter-top bikini, but we love the result! Here is a DIY tutorial on how to make a swimsuit.

What You Need:

  • 1/3 m nylon fabric
  • Two triangle bikini inserts
  • Pin
  • Fine-tipped marker
  • Needle and thread

Steps You Need To Follow:

  1. Take 1/3 m of nylon fabric swimsuit material and use two triangle bikini inserts from an old bikini.
  1. Begin with folding the fabric in half using the two sides together. Place the inserts on top about one inch away from the fold.
  1. The fold becomes the center line of the bikini top.
  1. Next, pin around the inserts to hold the fabric together and roughly figure out the size of the bandeau top.
  1. Start to draw out the scallop edges using a finely tipped marker. The scallops can be of ½ an inch in length and about 1/3rd inch in width.
  1. You can create about five scallops. Make sure that they are cut in a straight line and not in a round shape.
  1. After you have roughly made about 11 in out from the center, begin sloping downwards to create the tie.
  1. The top and bottom of the bikini should be symmetrical. Fold your fabric in half, lengthwise.
  1. Re-pin the fabric together and start cutting out the scallop edges. After that, cut down a slight angle until you reach the folded edge.
  1. Next, take a few scrap fabric and fold it in half. Then again cut it in half lengthwise.

  1. Hold it together using a few pins.
  1. Make an inside lining piece to hold the inserts in place. Make sure that the fabric is wide enough to cover both the triangle inserts but not longer than the scallop piece.
  1. Next, use more scrap fabric to cut off a small rectangle. Sew it to each side of your inserts to connect them together.
  1. Then place the inserts in the middle between your large and small piece. Sew around your inner lining piece so that the inserts do not fall out.
  1. Gather the bandeau in the middle. Make use of another scrap fabric piece and cut it into a long rectangle about 3 inches by 6 inches. Fold it lengthwise in thirds to hide the raw edges.
  1. Wrap it around the center of the bandeau until it is tight.
  1. Cut off extra length and stitch the ends together on the inside. Now your scallop bikini is ready to be tied up.

Method 3: Swoon Over This Lace Embroidered Bikini

Do you own an old bikini that fits but is boring? Maybe you can try spicing things up. Here is the step-by-step tutorial on how to make a bikini.

What You Need:

  • Regular or stretchy lace
  • Swimsuit
  • Scissors
  • Needle & Thread
  • Stitch witchery tape
  • Iron

Steps You Need To Follow:

  1. The first step is figuring out where you want to put the lace.
  1. Add a pretty trim along the bust and bottoms. You may use a different colored lace than the bathing suit to add a pop of color and make your bikini an eye candy.
  1. Next cut the stitch witchery tape as per the length of the top. Secure it using pins. Make sure the tape is a little shorter on both sides. Pin below so that the glue doesn’t melt when ironed.
  1. Measure and trim the lace leaving a little extra on both sides. You can also try scalloped sides of the lace facing your bust area.
  1. Now, iron on the opposite side until the tape becomes invisible.
  1. Iron and let it sit for a few seconds. Turn it over while making sure the lace stays flat. Lightly iron.
  1. Notice how the dips of the scallop areas of the lace are on the edge. This allows you to decide the placement of the lace. Fold in and sew the extra lace.

Method 10: Make A Few Snips To Design A DIY Swimsuit From An Old T-Shirt

When summer approaches, one of the worst challenges is to find a chic bathing suit that fits well. Well, one of the ways you can get a designer swimsuit is by deconstructing your old tee.

What You Need:

  • 2 T-Shirts in 2 different colors and sizes
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Needle & Thread

Steps You Need To Follow:

  1. The first step is to cut the bottom hem of both the shirts. Then take the top shirt and cut two 1-inch wide strips off the bottom. Then use two strips and cut them both in half twice. This will give you four equal strips.
  1. Take your bottom shirt and cut 1-inch wide strips from the bottom. Cut one of the strips in half and cut the other in half twice so that you are left with two equal strips.
  1. Then take off your top shirt and cut nine inches off the bottom making sure you cut through both the fabric layers. Pin both the layers together.
  1. Sketch a triangle that measures 10 inches across the bottom and eight inches down both sides. Then create an arch bottom to the triangle. After that, turn your fabric in a half circle and sketch another triangle of similar dimension.
  1. Pin the triangles and cut them off.
  1. Flip one of the triangles over and fold the top corner down one inch. Pin the arched bottom up one inch with care. Sew a seam so you can thread your strip once you have a complete look.
  1. Repeat the steps for the second triangle. Take five strips and attach the ends to a safety pin. Make use of the safety pin to thread the fifth strip through the tunnels of the triangle pieces. Your bikini is ready!
